Google Play screenshot requirements

Google Play works differently from the App Store. Instead of a list of exact sizes, it gives you a range of pixel sizes and a limit on how stretched the image can be. Here are the rules for each device type, the feature graphic, and the extra bar you need to clear to be shown in promotions.

Published 2 November 2026. Store rules checked against Apple's and Google's pages on 1 November 2026.

The rules every screenshot shares

  • Format: PNG or JPEG. PNGs must be 24-bit with no alpha channel.
  • Size: each side must be at least 320px and at most 3840px.
  • Shape: the long side can't be more than 2 times the short side.
  • Count: up to 8 per device type, and at least 2 screenshots in total across device types before you can publish.

That range is generous. A screenshot can be almost any size between 320px and 3840px, as long as it isn't too tall or too wide. The catch is that the minimum Google allows is far below what looks good on a modern phone, and far below the bar for promotion.

Phone

Phone screenshots are the ones every listing needs. 2 to 8 screenshots. For promotion, at least 4 at 9:16 (1080x1920 or larger) or 16:9. In Phonepose, phone screenshots export at 1080 × 1920, 1440 × 2560, 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, which sit inside Google's range at 9:16 or 16:9. Those are our chosen export sizes, not sizes Google requires.

Tablets: 7" and 10"

Android 7" tablet and Android 10" tablet screenshots are optional. Optional, but needed to be featured on large screens: at least 4 screenshots, 16:9 or 9:16, at least 1080px.

One thing to know: Google's large screen section says 1,080 to 7,680px while the general rule says max 3840px. We use 3840 as the safe upper limit.

Chromebook

Chromebook: Optional large screen listing: at least 4 screenshots, 16:9 or 9:16, at least 1080px. Both 16:9 landscape and 9:16 portrait work.

Wear OS

Wear OS: Required for Wear OS apps: 1:1, at least 384x384, no transparent background or masking. Google doesn't give a separate minimum count for Wear OS. The maximum of 8 is the general per-device-type limit.

Android XR

Android XR headset: Required for XR apps: 4 to 8 screenshots, 8:5, up to 8 MB each. 3840x2400 recommended, 1920x1200 minimum. That makes XR the strictest slot on Google Play: a fixed 8:5 shape and a file size cap.

Getting into promotion and recommendations

Meeting the basic rules lets you publish. Being shown in Google Play's recommendation and promotion surfaces asks for more:

  • At least 4 screenshots (games need at least three).
  • A minimum resolution of 1080px.
  • Portrait at 9:16, at least 1080 × 1920, or landscape at 16:9, at least 1920 × 1080.

So while 320px screenshots are technically accepted, designing at 1080 × 1920 or larger and uploading 4 or more is the practical baseline. The screenshot validator tells you when a set of phone screenshots passes the basic rules but misses the promotion bar.

The feature graphic

The Google Play feature graphic is a single wide banner that goes with your listing. Exactly 1024x500, JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no alpha. Keep the main content centred and avoid pure white or black backgrounds.

Google's asset page gives the size rules but doesn't say in words that the feature graphic is required to publish. Play Console treats it as required, so plan on making one and confirm in Play Console.

A few practical points for the design:

  • Keep your app name and main message in the middle, away from the edges.
  • Use a colour background rather than pure white or pure black.
  • Keep text short. The banner is wide and short, so one line usually works better than two.

Android TV banner

If you ship on Android TV, there is one more exact-size graphic: the Android TV banner. Required for Android TV apps. Exactly 1280x720, JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no alpha.

Both exact-size graphics at a glance:

  • Google Play feature graphic: 1024 × 500, 1 per listing
  • Android TV banner: 1280 × 720, 1 per listing

Common mistakes

  • Too tall for the aspect limit. A tall phone screenshot can break the 2 to 1 limit. Google measures the whole image, so crop or add space at the sides rather than squeezing the content.
  • A PNG with an alpha channel. Google wants 24-bit PNG with no alpha. Some design tools save an alpha channel by default even when nothing is transparent, so re-export with it switched off, or use JPEG.
  • Reusing App Store files unchanged. Some iPhone sizes are taller than Google's limit allows, and they show an iPhone rather than an Android phone. Make a separate Android set on an Android device frame.
  • Stopping at the minimum count. 2 screenshots are enough to publish, but promotion asks for at least 4.
  • Over the size cap. Anything over 3840px on a side won't be accepted, even for tablets and Chromebooks.

A sensible plan for most Android apps

  1. Design 4 to 8 phone screenshots at 1080 × 1920 portrait or larger.
  2. Make the 1024 × 500 feature graphic.
  3. If you want to be featured on large screens, add at least 4 tablet screenshots at 9:16 or 16:9, at least 1080px.
  4. Add Wear OS, XR or TV assets only if you ship there.
  5. Run everything through the validator, then upload in Play Console.

If you are shipping on both stores, the App Store screenshot sizes guide covers Apple's side, and how to make app screenshots covers the design work for both. Phonepose's 3D Pixel 10 Pro mockup and the template gallery export straight to the sizes above.
